Our Educational Philosophy

In our classes, subject matter is introduced primarily through quality story books. By utilizing books as the foundation of lessons, facts are given a meaningful context that provide the mental connections to support sustained learning. Well-written books capture a child’s attention and encourage careful listening. When we add the element of class discussions and narration, our students gain further comprehension and practice curiosity and independent thinking. It also gives students the opportunity to connect to a variety of human experiences throughout history and safely explore social and ethical concepts.

These subjects are often the footnote in the modern classroom, but we would like to restore them to their great importance! Where skills like reading and math help facilitate learning, liberal arts studies ignite the curiosity of the life long learner. When we learn the stories of history and great artists, we are learning what it means to be human. When we learn science, we are learning about the glory of existence in our universe. This curriculum doesn’t only teach facts, it builds life fulfillment. As they grow older, they will have amassed a foundation of knowledge that they can reference to unearth deeper truths.

Play and creative exploration is vital for children because it’s how they naturally learn about the world and themselves. Play is especially important in learning because it turns abstract concepts into hands-on, meaningful experiences. When children play, they experiment, explore, and test ideas in a safe, low-pressure way—whether building, role-playing, or creating art. This active engagement strengthens critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, making lessons “stick” far better than passive instruction. Play also encourages curiosity and intrinsic motivation, so children pursue knowledge because it’s interesting, not just because they’re told to. This method of learning honors the development and personhood of our students.

Current research in neuroscience shows that even short periods of activity sets the stage for better cognitive function and memory retention in children. This can make a world of difference for students of all ages when it comes to improving school performance! We utilize an Occupational Therapist developed methods that combines movement, rhythm and sensory input to lay a foundation for calm, integrated learning. We will begin every day with exercise, and finish our day with a calming movement routine.

Let’s face it, we live in the heart of the beautiful central coast where we can enjoy mild weather for the large majority of the year. It would be a shame to expect our children to spend the day inside! Not only does nature offer an ideal place for restoration and focus, it also cultivates wonder for us all. In addition to recess and lunch, we make a habit of taking our classes outside to our beautiful, shaded yard once or twice a week for our science, social studies and art lessons.

We believe the best learning happens when the brain is relaxed and engaged, not in survival mode. Our program creates a relaxed environment by allowing children to be willing collaborators in lessons. They actively engage through discussions, creative projects and trial and error exercises - where making mistakes is an accepted part of the process. Learning this way leads to true understanding that is verified by the students level of self-motivated participation. This eliminates the need for testing, peer competition and punishment/rewards systems

Are you worried about the use of AI and technology in classrooms? With so many unknowns, we prefer to keep our classrooms simple in this regard - just books and materials that have been used to teach for centuries. We honor that technology may have a place in your family home and that everyone learns differently, so you may receive emails that include links to video sources that may build upon what your student learns in class. But this will always be at the discretion of families and never required or expected.

Many parents find it challenging to trust the social dynamics of a drop-off setting, hoping their child will feel welcomed and valued by their peers and instructors. That’s why it’s essential to have trustworthy adults who cultivate a culture of kindness, gently guide behavior without singling out struggling learners, and actively teach social skills within the classroom. Students receive clear, simple instruction on how to independently mediate and resolve conflicts and are given ample adult support prior to and during difficult moments. Our proactive and reactive classroom management techniques are taught to all teachers and volunteers, and we offer regular meetings for parents interested in learning more.

Kindred Village is more than a classroom—it is a community hub for families navigating the homeschooling journey. Outside of our routine classes, we offer free community gatherings through out the year such as seasonal festivals, field trips, and park play. Parents have the opportunity to connect through Support Circles which provide encouragement and facilitate discussion on topics related to homeschooling. In addition, parental volunteer and mutual participation in classes is always encouraged! By weaving family support and involvement into our program, we ensure that Kindred Village nurtures not only students, but also the community of parents and caregivers who walk alongside them.
